Should I Major in Music or Business?

Question by Dawn;): Should I Major in Music or Business?
I have always loved singing, and my life would not be anything without it. I am going to college for music performance, but my family says I cannot get a job with a music degree unless its teaching, and even that is sketchy. They say I should major in business and minor in music so i can get a job. I can see the logic in this, but music is what my heart is set on. What should i do???
About the other instruments, I am learning piano and guitar…

I appreciate all the thoughtful and heartfelt advice. I know that going into business is the logical thing to do. I just am so scared that I will get stuck in a 9-5 job and music will only ever be a hobby, as to so many people it is. I just don’t know how I will have any chance of doing what I desperately want to do if I don’t give it 110%.
My mom really wanted to be an actress when she was in high-school ( not movies or TV, REAL acting, you know, on a stage!) I’ve seen the videos and just by looking at her, anyone can tell how much more she put into it than the others in the plays. She loved acting not for any kind of limelight, but simply for the act of performing on stage, she loved every aspect of it.
Under her family’s influence, she took the safe road and went into the medical field. It ended up taking all her time and she got comfortable with just a normal routine and never could persue acting. She tells me that every day she regrets that decision, because it cost her her dream, despite the fact that she has a home, two kids, and a wonderful soulmate, at age 39. I don’t want to repeat her mistake. I want to be smart, but what if taking the safe road costs me the only thing that makes me happy?

Your parents would be correct. Music and the arts are taking a huge nosedive and the job market is so competitive (especially now with so many overqualified people looking for jobs that aren’t available) no one outside of music really cares about a music degree. At least with a business degree, an employer would think you might be able to contribute something valuable to their company other than being able to bust out a great tune on karaoke night.

If I had to do it over again, I would have majored in something more useful to modern society and minored in music.
