Ban in UAE?

Question by Mandy: Ban in UAE?
I worked in the UAE as musician. But during my work there I never saw nor signed a contract, I never saw my visa or my passport as this was detained by the venue and eventually my pay became inconstant and minimized. I resigned a month before I left but after I left my boss told me I would be banned from the UAE. Is this possible and where can I check if I have been banned? And what are my rights?
Thanks.

1) Demand the return of your passport! Regarding the UAE Law it illegal if the employer keeps the employee’s passport.

2) Your employer is right. After resigning a 6 months ban automatically will be imposed unless you receive a NOC from your employer.

3) Look at your passport and check on what kind of visa you are working. If you work on a visit visa, you are considered working illegaly which means you AND your employer face problems if the Authorities will notice.

4) In case your employer did the right thing, obtained a labour card and a residence permit for you, you can file a complaint at the Labour Department for unpaid dues. In this case no ban will be imposed.

5) Try to find an amicable solution. Most important: get your passport back!

All the best.

edit Abdullah: it is still illegal to hold somebody’s passport. Point blanc. We are not in Saudi and nobody is allowed to put any travel restriction on somebody, because that’s what it means. btw. regarding working law about an unlimited contract you are not up to date. But – like you said. Laws are changing real fast and mostly without any notice:))
