I Work At JCPenney, But I Need A Job That Pays Better…?

Question by Michelle: I Work At JCPenney, But I Need A Job That Pays Better…?
I just turned 19 in September, and I am getting ready to go to SFC in Gainesville, FL in January as a full-time student to major in Psychology- and possibly English later on at UF, or stay with Psychology and go to Johns Hopkins.

The point is, I really need a better job. I have to pay for schooling on my own, and I would like to move out of my parent’s house and move somewhere closer to SFC to save me gas money (right now I live on the other side of town of SFC. It takes me about 30 min. to get there- without traffic).

I currently work at JCPenney’s as a sales associate, and I get paid $ 7.75 an hour, but they work me rediculous hours (8-5, 10-9, 10-2, 11-9, etc.) that definitely would need to change when school starts because I’ll have classes everyday until about 3:30pm- except the weekends. I’m working there for seasonal employment right now, but I’m hoping to find a better job that will give me less hours, but enough pay to kinda compensate ($ 8 and up?). The supervisor at JCPenney’s is horrible at schedules, and will make you come to work on a day(s) that you needed/requested off, and she’ll get mad at you if you tell her you can’t come in. I want to work for a company that will respect my busy schedule, and work around my schedule- not me work around theirs.

JCPenney’s is my second job. My first job was teaching Middle School and High School kids how to read music and march for a Middle/Senior High School’s marching band. That was a seasonal job as well (summer). I would really like to work somewhere that will take me as a part time employee rather than a seasonal worker.

I’d prefer to work with animals, like at PETCO or Petsmart, but I think JCPenney’s pays more than them… unfortunately. I also do not want to work at a fast-food place; I’m too slow lol. They’d fire me lol.

Anywhere is fine, as long as it’s not like Hooters or anything like that.

I’d prefer a starting pay of $ 8 or more. $ 7.75 isn’t enough! Gainesville is getting expensive now! 🙁 And it’s extremely rare that JCPenney’s gives out raises (there’s a woman who’s been there for 35 years and is still paid $ 7.75 and she’s never had a promotion)

Please help. I’d really like to grow up and move out of my parent’s house and live on my own for college. I get so much more done when I am by myself, and I believe that I would be a better student if I was by myself with no distractions!
I know how much it would cost to live on my own. The typical apartment will run from $ 600-$ 1100 a month depending on what side of town you wanna live in. I have school out of the way, since I have grants and a student loan helping me out. My paychecks now are about $ 400 but that’s every other week, and with insane hours I’ll never be able to work when I start school. I just want to find a job that pays good enough to where I don’t have to work all day long to make enough money to survive.

Have you added up how much it would cost you to live on your own? You’d have a tough time financing just that on an $ 8 an hour job, without even paying for school. Not really practical to think that you can move out on your own, pay for that and also pay for school.

Good luck.
