Q&A: Which University has a better music business program?
Question by feralangel: Which University has a better music business program?
Well, I presently have admits from University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Florida Atlantic University and Columbia College, Chicago. Miami is toooo expensive for me to afford to live in but, it is supposed to have one of the best programs in the country! Others are cheaper but I don’t know if these programs compare to University of Miami’s reputation in the field. Well I wanna know if its worth it for me to land up with a huge loan on my head after Miami…
Which city is better in the music business field? By that i mean.. Networking, Record companies, jobs, etc.
Ive been confused for a really long time now, and hope someone here can help me out.

You’re right about U Miami. It has one of the best music business schools in the US. I consider it top 2, to be honest. And it is far, far, FAR stronger than the other schools you have listed, both as a general university and in terms of your major. In terms of reputation, they do not compare.
I do believe you’ll have more opportunities out of U Miami than you will out of the other schools. However, you’ll need to take advantage of those opportunities – do an internship or two, get involved in music business on campus, get close to your professors, etc. Make taking out that loan worth it.
If you really, really can’t afford to go to U Miami, then follow the money to one of the other two schools. Go to the one that’s cheaper, and then make your own opportunities. Do internships, network, go to conferences, etc: everything you can to make sure you get that first job when you graduate. Because it is not that you can’t get into the business from one of those schools – you can – it’s that UMiami may give you more of an edge, especially at first. So if you go elsewhere, make your own “edge” – make your own opportunities.
See if you can apply for some external scholarships as well. Check FastWeb, talk to your guidance counsellor, etc. Even if you get a few small ones, they’ll help.
