I can like write chords, and tabs on guitar, and lyrics. But not like sheet music, do I need to know how to sell a song to a record company?

Of course not. Paul McCartney can’t read music. Neither can any of the Bee Gees.

It certainly helps though. If you’re going to be in the music industry, you should know how to exchange ideas on paper. Not being able to do so is no different than an illiterate novelist… it just gets tolerated in the music industry more than the literary world.
