Questions about moving to Yuma, AZ?

Question by Hope D: Questions about moving to Yuma, AZ?
Hi! My husband is considering a job in Yuma, AZ. I’m originally from PA and he’s originally from TX. He was military for over 10 years. We are now in TN and have two kids: ages 8 (going on 9) and 6. I am almost done earning my degree (should finish this summer with a LIberal studies degree in Mass Communication and Psychology, although although my internship was with an music artist development company) and my husband is about half done with his degree. We are doing as much research this time around before a move. Here are our questions.

-How are allergies down there? Humidity?

-How are the gyms? Sports areas? Parks for kids? Recreation Programs?

-Shopping: Grocery stores (access to organic, whole, and health foods)? Music (instruments mainly)? Clothing? Farmers/Flea Markets? Restaurants?

-Community: Activities? Public pools? Libraries? bowling? ice rinks? Is it the “buddy system”? Accepting of outsiders? racism? Dance centers? Martial Arts? What sports are available for kids?

-Education: How are the public schools? Private Schools (probaby lean towards one of the Catholic schools)? is there an emphasis on education? after school care/programs? Summer care/Summer Camps?

-Health Care: endocrinologists (I have Hashimoto’s so I have to go for checkups every few months)? VA? Dental/Orthodontists? Therapists? ENT?

-Jobs: I’m primarily a musician (drummer). How is finding a job in music, either teaching, or within the industry doing just about anything (willing to commute if needed)? To teach within school systems (subbing or as a teacher), would I need to have a license right away or could I go for the test later on?

-Housing: What should I avoid in a house down here (ie. carpeting, tile, etc.)? Would you consider a pool at the house a necessity? How easy is it to maintain sod/grass? will I be able to have a garden, trees, plants, etc.? What subdivisionsneighborhoods should I look at/avoid?

How is this Yuma for young families? Tell me anything else you think I should know. 🙂 Thanks!

Yuma is a relatively small town (but the largest anywhere near by), and is in the middle of the desert. Based on your many criteria I highly doubt you would be happy in Yuma.
