Question by Charlie: im interested in the music business, should i send demos?
im 14 from london and have a passion for music of all kinds. i listen to rock, rnb but mostly rap as i have a hobby of making up lyrics in my head when im bored. when i compare myself to other people my age i see the big difference that when they rap they rap about random stuff with no meaning behind it where as mine mostly always does. Ive been called the new eminem probly because im white but also been told my lyrics are insane when i really try. So recently i told my frined that i plan to record some demos and send them off to record labels in the uk. i have a few questions to ask and hopefully u can help me.I am not sure exactly how to make demos without a proper studio? i have downloaded audacity to make instrumentals but is audacity a appropriate software to use when making a demo? when sending in my demo what will the companies be looking for really?what will almost definantly want to make them sign me? when sending out the demos should i add something to the parcel to make sure they open it and listen rather than throwing it in the bin? and any other tips u can give me would be great and really appreciated:)

You need to hook up with someone who either has a home studio or someone who can help you build a cheap one. If you are going to record demos to send to record companies then they have to be of “more than decent” quality. You mentioned that you are around other people who rap so ask around and see if anyone knows of any managers…or look up “talent agents or scouts” in the phone book. They are going to want a percentage of what you make so in all honesty you best bet is to try to record your demo yourself if you can find someone to help you out and then find someone use the computer to google records that you could send your demos to. Good luck.
