You should pay attention to independent companies, they aren’t that “profit only” oriented. They are often run by people having fresh ideas about music. Well, it still a business, a showbiz. That’s why often they sign contracts with the “big guys” like EMI or WB – exchanging possible profit for distribution and promotion support. For big companies it’s a good deal: they don’t have to discover a new talent themselves and if the project isn’t that successful – they didn’t invest in the recording process and their loses are protected by a complecated insurances and taxes system. When an “indie” company collapses it doesn’t ruin the whole system.
One of the greatest indie empires in the past was Motown.
One of the brightest in UK was Factory Records (Joy Division ~ New Order was their main star)
One of the brightest companies still going strong: Mute Records. http://mute.com
They are home for Depeche Mode, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Goldfrapp, Moby, Erasure and Yaz (Yazoo). It was home for Wire, Client, Buzzcocks, Mando Diao, Inspiral Carpets, Nitzer Ebb and many others http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mute_Records_discography
They are specialized in electronic, industrial and any other undeground music. No, Mute doesn’t pay me for writing that, in fact I spent a lot of mony buying their stuff. Not for nothing they were asked to make the remaster of all Kraftwerk’s albums – that’s what I call a reputation.
