2009 Grammy Auction (Lot 101): GNR Cover Art

The 51st Grammy Auction: Lot 101 Guns N’ Roses Album Pencil Art Pencil on paper by Billy White, Jr. (1987). Used as the album cover image for Guns N’ Roses’ “Appetite for Destruction.” The design was drawn as the artwork for Axl Rose’s tattoo and redrawn by Andy Engell for the album. The original artwork for the album was rejected for being too offensive. David Geffen is said to have liked the tattoo and chose White’s artwork as the new cover image. Rose had the tattoo inked by Robert Benedetti at Sunset Strip Tattoo while still recording the album. “Appetite” was the band’s first release and catapulted the band to stardom.
