#20 Devo – Gut Feeling/Slap your Mammy (Q: Are we not men? A: We are Devo)
Devo’s debut is awesome – quintissential new wave. This band was proclaimed to be the “future of punk” by iggy pop, david bowie, robert fripp, and brian eno(and for a short time, they really were). Although widely argued about, they finally decided the album was to be produced by brian eno(1978). Eno paid for the flights and studio cost for the band, confident that the band would be signed to a record contract. In return for his work on the album, Eno asked for a share of any subsequent deals. The debut received mixed reviews upon release, but over time has found a spot on many “best of” lists from publications like rolling stone, spin, and pitchforkmedia. Don’t let the radiation suits fool you, Devo could rock with the best of them.
